Since the 1940s, we have been told (through health ministries’ notices, news, toothpaste advertisements, billboards etc.) that fluoride is great for dental health viz. remineralising our teeth, fight cavities etc. and it has been added to the water we use ever since. BUT is it REALLY???
Let us take a look at fluoride.
Fluoride is made up of a number of substances, most commonly, hydrofluorosilicic acid, which is a byproduct of aluminium mining.
According to the USA Board of Scientific Counselors (“BSC”) Working Group reported by dentist, Bill Osmunson DDS, “Fluoride is highly toxic. Fluoride is also a known neurotoxin…”
The USA National Toxicology Program (“NTP”) reported that exposing children to high levels of fluoride is “consistently associated” with lower IQ and other neurodevelopmental and cognitive issues. The NTP also found an “inverse association between estimated fluoride exposure and IQ in children” meaning the higher the exposure, the lower the IQ and vice versa. In a study published in May 2024, the NTP concluded that prenatal fluoride exposure was associated with “neurobehavioural problems” among children. The lead investigator of the NTP study, Ashley Malin said that the results suggest fluoride may negatively affect foetal development and that there is “no known benefit” of fluoride consumption for foetuses. During the pre natal period, the foetuses are especially vulnerable to injury from environmental assaults.
NTP defined high exposure as drinking water with fluoride concentrations that exceed the 1.5 mg per litre limit set by the WHO. Besides drinking water, fluoride is also found in toothpaste, canned food, soft drinks etc. made in facilities using fluoridated water.
Further, fluoride makes the body absorb extra aluminium. Research had shown that aluminium showed up alarmingly in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. Apart from neurological damage, fluoride also causes calcification of the pineal gland, damage to bone, kidney, liver, etc.
China, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Japan, Sweden, Hungary and Netherlands had banned fluoride, stating that it is ineffective, highly toxic and should not be used.
Only 8 countries in the world are still giving its population fluoridated water (more than 50% of their population’s drinking water). They are the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Israel, Singapore, Malaysia and Columbia. Investigative journalist Christopher Bryson examines fluoride’s disturbing history. He found out that in its early days, fluoride was a widely known and well documented killer. Documents from early lawsuits against fluoride manufacturers clearly revealed that fluoride was hazardous to humans and the environment, with damages reaching into tens of millions of dollars. By 1930, the aluminium industry was the largest and most influential fluoride polluter. Fluoridation provided the chemical industry an opportunity to void liability of their poisonous fluoride waste by means of promoting it as a health benefit. Otherwise, they would have to expend money for the safe disposal of fluoride.
A Danish scientist, Dr Philip Grandjean, head of Environmental Medicine Research Unit at the University of Southern Denmark and adjunct professor of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health was called as an expert witness testifying on behalf of Fluoride Action Network in the USA case of Fluoride Action Network v Environmental Protection Agency. In an interview on 2 February 2024 with investigative journalist, Derrick Broze, Dr Grandjean shared that his research on fluoride started 50 years ago. In the 1930s fluoride poisoning was first discovered in Copenhagen in the form of skeletal fluorosis. Patients with skeletal fluorosis had denser bones that looked like marbles in X-rays and makes them prone to breakage. He said that a physician and professor at the University of Copenhagen in the 1930s observed that the workers at cryolite mines in Greenland had symptoms in the central nervous system which showed that fluoride was likely to be affecting the functions of the brain. Cryolite is a mineral used as a solvent for bauxite in the production of aluminium. Dr Grandjean carried on the work by looking at the mortality of the cryolite mine workers who had elevated exposure to fluoride. His main finding was the excess occurrence of cancer with the risk increasing with the duration of employment at the factory.
Dr. Grandjean supported the report by the NTP which concluded that there is a relationship between fluoride exposure and lower IQs in children and confirmed that there is a tendency of the higher the fluoride exposure during foetal age (from the mother’s exposure), the greater the loss of IQ at school age.
Michael Connett, the lead attorney for Fluoride Action Network submitted, “NTP’s landmark report confirms that there is a large, consistent and reliable body of scientific research linking fluoride to reduced IQ and that the doses associated with lower IQ are precariously close to what hundreds and millions of Americans consume daily…This is isn’t what people signed up for when we started adding fluoride to water. We didn’t sign up to add a neurotoxicant to our water. We signed up for something that could help our teeth. Now that we know that it can affect the brain, we really need to go back to square one on this.”
History was made when on 25 September 2024, in the said case of Fluoride Action Network v Environmental Protection Agency, the US Federal Court held that “…fluoridation of water at 0.7 mg per liter – the level presently considered “optimal” in the United States – poses an unreasonable risk of reduced IQ in children…the Court finds there is an unreasonable risk of such injury, a risk sufficient to require the EPA to engage with a regulatory response…One thing the EPA cannot do, however, in the face of this Court’s finding, is to ignore that risk.”
